Transparency & Financial Support

The Mat-Su Sentinel is committed to transparency in all aspects of our organization's funding.

Accepting financial support does not mean we endorse the donors or their products, services or opinions.

We accept gifts, grants and sponsorships from individuals, organizations and foundations to support our general operations, issue coverage and special projects. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization operating as a public trust, we do not pay certain taxes. We may receive funding from standard government programs offered to nonprofits or similar businesses.

Our news judgments are made independently, not based on or influenced by donors or any revenue stream. We do not give supporters the right to assign, review or edit content.

We do not run political ads or endorse candidates. We do accept advertising and sponsorsed content on a case-by-case basis, with clear labeling so the source of the content is clear.

We disclose corporate and philanthropic revenue sources.

Our standard practice is to list donors who gift more than $5,000. In limited cases, we may accept funding through donor-advised funds or other intermediary entities that request we do not publicly disclose or draw attention to the identity of the recommending donor. In these instances, we disclose the funding source as the intermediary. We accept such funding only when it is consistent with our mission, free of editorial influence, and does not create conflicts of interest. In these cases, we retain complete control over how content and newsroom work are executed.

A list of corporate, philanthropic and major donors is available here.

We accept donations from elected officials and candidates for public office up to $240 per year, equivalent to a $20 monthly subscription.

We will not accept donations from sources that our board of directors determines present a conflict of interest with our work or compromise our independence.

It was updated in September 2025 in accordance with nonprofit news best practices, which allow donations from elected officials and candidates, capped at a rate that aligns with standard news subscription fees. A previous version of this statement prohibited any contributions from elected officials or those running for office.
