Update, Monday (Aug 11) 11 a.m.

Paving on the Bogard-Trunk Road roundabout is scheduled for Monday night into Tuesday morning after wet weather delayed portions of the project over the weekend.

The road will remain open during the work, but drivers should avoid the area if possible, state transportation officials said in an email Monday morning.

“We will not be closing the roundabout for tonight’s work. However, paving a roundabout while maintaining traffic is difficult,” the email said. “Please expect long delays and take an alternate route if possible.”

What you need to know:

  • The Bogard-Trunk Road roundabout in Palmer will be closed to vehicles from 8 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for paving work. Pedestrian access will remain open.
  • Drivers should use alternate routes or follow detour signs to reach Palmer-Fishhook Road, Palmer-Wasilla Highway or areas on Bogard Road near the roundabout.
  • The closure is part of an ongoing Bogard Road paving project scheduled for completion by Aug. 25.

PALMER — A roundabout at the intersection of Bogard and Trunk roads will close for the weekend as part of an ongoing state pavement project.

The roundabout will close to vehicles starting at 8 p.m. Friday and reopen at 5 a.m. Monday. Pedestrian access will remain open, but will pass through the work area via a flagger, officials said.

When open, the area connects Palmer-Fishhook Road to the north and Palmer-Wasilla Highway to the south. It also offers an east-west route between Palmer and Wasilla via Bogard Road. About 10,000 vehicles pass through the roundabout daily, according to state traffic data.

During the closure, traffic connecting from Trunk Road to Palmer-Fishhook will be routed through Palmer via the Glenn Highway. Traffic on the Bogard corridor will be detoured down Springfield Road to the west or 49th State Street to the east.

Road closures will start just after Colony Middle School for local traffic to the east and at Springfield Road for all drivers to the west. Local traffic will be permitted to travel north on Trunk Road to Katherine Drive. Traffic will be turned around starting just above the roundabout between Bogard and Palmer-Fishhook, according to a construction map.

The closure is part of an ongoing $11.5 million Bogard Road paving project stretching from the roundabout to near Wasilla High School. Work started in May and is expected to be complete by Aug. 25, said Todd Smith, a state transportation engineer overseeing the project.

With the exception of the Trunk to Bogard roundabout, all work east of Seward Meridian Parkway is done, Smith said.

Crews are now working on a final stretch between Seward Meridian and Main Street in Wasilla, he said. Like other portions of the road during the project, that section will be milled to gravel and repaved, he said. Construction will take place at night, with drivers traveling over the gravel surface during the day, he said.

The project includes pavement resurfacing, culvert repairs, utility upgrades and ADA-compliant sidewalk improvements. The road was last fully repaved in 2007, officials said.
