WASILLA — Mat-Su residents can mark the 24th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks at ceremonies and events throughout the region this week, including an event over the weekend.

Looking for a way to honor the day? Here are some local options:

Matanuska Borough fire station 9/11 events

Fire stations at three locations in the Mat-Su will host 9/11 remembrance events on Sept. 11, according to a borough announcement.

Station 6-1 in downtown Wasilla will host an early-morning ceremony honoring the firefighters lost on Sept. 11 and the moments the twin towers fell.

Personnel will place 343 flags — one for each firefighter killed on Sept. 11, 2001. Moments of silence will be observed at 5:59 a.m. and 6:28 a.m. A bell ceremony for “calling the fallen home” will also be held. Flags will be posted on ladder trucks extended outside the firehouse. The public is invited to visit the station to see the flags.
