Early voting now open for Mat-Su gas tax, assembly, school board races
Early voting is open through November 3.
What you need to know:
- Early voting for the Matanuska-Susitna Borough election is open through Nov. 3, with polling sites in Wasilla, Palmer, Houston, Talkeetna and Trapper Creek.
- Key ballot items include an advisory vote on a 7-cent-per-gallon gas tax, races for Mat-Su Assembly and school board seats in five districts, and a proposal to update senior and veteran property tax exemptions. Certain parts of Meadow Lakes will also vote on local issues such as Road Service Area expansions.

PALMER – Early voting is now open for the Nov. 4 Matanuska-Susitna Borough election, which includes an advisory question on whether the Mat-Su Assembly should approve a 7-cent-per-gallon gas tax.
Mat-Su voters in five districts will also select a new assembly or school board member as part of this year’s elections, and all ballots include a question on whether a senior and veteran property tax exemption rules should be updated to allow mid-year enrollment.
Early voting is available in Wasilla at the Alaska Division of Elections regional office in the North Fork Professional Building, Suite 102, at 1700 E. Bogard Road. Voting there is open through Nov. 3 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The facility is also open for early voting Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.
In Palmer, early voting is held at the Borough Administration Building on East Dahlia Avenue. The location is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed on weekends.
Early voting is also available in three areas north of Wasilla: Houston City Hall, the Talkeetna Public Library and the Trapper Creek Public Library. Voting at these locations is available Monday through Friday during each facility’s normal business hours.
Just what is on each residents’ ballot depends on where they are local. Ballots for residents in Districts 1, 2, 4, 5 and 7 will include the gas tax question, the senior and veteran property tax exemption question, and races for Assembly, school board, or both.
Ballots in District 3 and 6 do not include any Assembly or School Board seats. Some ballots in certain sections of Meadow Lakes will include additional questions on whether to extend a Road Service Area to cover more blocks.
Voters can locate their polling place by searching the Alaska Division of Elections’ website.
