Colony signal caller ranks No. 2 nationally in passing yards

MaxPreps recently held a national flag football tournament in Chula Vista, Calif., featuring 17 top teams from around the country. The showcase didn’t include any Alaskans, which is a shame because Colony quarterback Bri Parrent is one of the best in the business.

The sophomore signal caller on Thursday eclipsed the 4,000-yard passing benchmark for the season and accounted for three touchdowns to lead the Knights to a 21-0 victory over top-ranked Dimond in the Valley. It was an upset on paper, but not in reality — not with a player of Parrent’s caliber on the field.

She completed 22-of-27 throws for 302 yards and two TDs to go with 72 rushing yards and a score. She is a dynamic dual-option threat who can score throwing or running and has piled up 64 total TDs in 14 games this year.

With 4,144 passing yards, Parrent has pulled within 29 yards of national leader Kate Meier, of JSerra Catholic (CA), who last week led the Lions to a 21-6 victory over Newport Harbor in the inaugural MaxPreps tournament.

Alaska joined the party in 2006 as the second state after Florida to add the girls sport, which is growing at a rapid rate.

The recent MaxPreps Flag Football Showdown was invite-only and included teams from California, Alabama and Montana, although tournament director Steve Montoya of MaxPreps told the Orange County Register they hope to expand the tournament to 32 teams in 2027.

Colony definitely deserves an invitation for having one of the top quarterbacks in the country.

Alaska flag football has a reputation for standing tall against Lower 48 competition. In 2024, South Anchorage beat reigning Louisiana state champion De La Salle 13-0 at the Nike Football Kickoff Classic in Beaverton, Ore.

Last year’s Alaska player of the year Jillian Preston earned MaxPreps All-American third team honors and will play flag football at Division II Saginaw Valley State, which will play its first game in 2027.

Preston threw 56 TDs last year, while Parrent has tossed 49 scores this year with two games remaining in the regular season in addition to next month’s ASAA state tournament at Wasilla High School.

Third-ranked Colony (13-1) beat the previously undefeated Lynx on Thursday, thanks to another big game from Parrent.

She connected with freshman wideout Emily Atkinson for seven receptions and two scores, including a 70-yard catch-and-run TD in the first quarter.

She also found senior Ella Richardson for nine catches and 124 yards.

Late in the second quarter, Parrent engineered a 10-play, 83-yard scoring drive that was topped off by a 20-yard strike to Atkinson with 36 seconds left before halftime.

This was Parrent’s eighth game with 300 passing yards or more. Her season high was 409 yards against West Valley on Sept. 4. She’s tossed as many as seven TDs in one game and has two other games with six.

She also has 10 games with 100 rushing yards or more, highlighted by her 183-yard game against Wasilla and another 172 yards against Redington.

Colony is among a group of state tournament favorites that includes perennial power Dimond, defending state champion South and 2024 title winner North Pole led by All-American halfback Jade Skipps.
