PALMER — The Mat-Su Sentinel recently received about $2,150 grant from the Palmer Community Foundation to purchase professional photography equipment, a key step in expanding the reach and quality of local visual journalism in the area.

The grant allowed the Sentinel to invest in a new camera and accessories to support clearer, more dynamic photo coverage of local events, government meetings, community life and breaking news.

“With new professional photography equipment, the Mat-Su Sentinel will improve the visual quality and reach of local nonpartisan news coverage, engaging more readers across the region,” the Palmer Community Foundation said in its 2025 grant awards announcement posted on its Facebook page.

Strong photojournalism is an essential part of local news reporting, Sentinel editor Amy Bushatz said. Images can show what words alone cannot, helping readers better understand and connect with the events and issues that shape the Mat-Su.

The Palmer Community Foundation grant represents more than just a monetary investment in the Sentinel – it demonstrates the trust the community puts in the Sentinel to provide excellent, clear and factual coverage of local news and events.

The Sentinel launched in 2024 as an independent, nonprofit newsroom focused on public service journalism. It is supported by reader donations, local sponsors, and grants from organizations that believe in strengthening local news.

The Palmer Community Foundation is an affiliate of the Alaska Community Foundation and awards annual grants to nonprofits that support the well-being and vibrancy of Palmer area residents.

The Sentinel received the notice of the grant award in April and purchased the new equipment in late May.
